BUILDING COMMUNITY!
My two boys and I got together with our community to turn a nasty nook/phonebooth into a free pantry/library and garden located between Chucks Hop Shop and the gas station on 20th/Union! It was truly a group effort: the boys cleaned the nook and phone booth (literally scrubbing on hands and knees), Blick sold us the the phone booth paint, Lowes cut the wood for the door/shelves, Moises (solar power guy next to the taco truck) hooked me up with a door latch, Chuck said he would supply the free pantry/library with food from his shop, the Chuck's staff hooked us up with beverages while we worked, Katy's Corner Cafe kept us going with praise and support, Baso Fibonacci painted the mural (a big deal - https://www.instagram.com/basofibonacci/?hl=en), City People Nursery helped choose the appropriate plants for the location and my neighbors donated the stone, brick and paving stones to build the flower bed barrier. It was such a good feeling to have community support and was also really good for my teenage boys to participate in the wellbeing of their community and to hear positive feedback from people walking by. It really only took about 1 hr. a week for three weeks (depending on weather and school schedules) except Baso who had many hours invested in creating the mural. Loving people! This is what I mean when I talk about building community!
